Insecure Debrief: Girl, GET. UP!

Friday, September 28, 2018

“Girl, GET UP!” “Bruh, if you don’t get up outta that bed and get yourself together!” “Bruhhhhhhh!?!”

These are just a few things I caught myself yelling at the screen during last Sunday’s episode of Insecure. As I watched Issa start and end her days sulking about some man and I watched her entire character change over the lack of response/communication from a guy who’d gotten her hopes up, I realized that Issa was me. Well…Issa was publicizing the girl that I was last year and the year before that and the year bef—you get the point.

For almost 4 years, I was that girl that waited on a text from the man that I thought would be my husband; but, the funniest part is that while I was waiting on a text back, I was also waiting on him to commit to me as a boyfriend. Yeah, you read that right! I spent 4 years living in desperation for a man that couldn’t even commit to a relationship with me. As I watched Insecure, I was yelling at that girl because she found her worth in a man that wasn’t capable of seeing my value. I was yelling at the girl who was willing to settle for the bare minimum. My heart genuinely hurts for that girl that was literally (like literally) begging someone to be with her. And why? All because I wanted to be good enough for someone who was only meant to be temporary.

So, I’ve had 4 WHOLE years to come up with tips on how to get you through the season of being “that girl” (or guy because men experience heartbreak too) – we’ll call it, The Season of Insecurity (word to Issa Rae).

#1 – Don’t be consumed by what DIDN’T happen. I know you had plans of marrying that person. I know you had names picked out for the children you’d talked about; but, just because it didn’t happen with them, doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen…it’s just not going to happen with that person. And THAT’S OKAY!

#2 – Guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23), but remain open to the relationships in your life that are thriving right now. Do not allow the failure of this relationship/situationship to make your heart hard. Work twice as hard to maintain your vulnerability as you did in attempt to maintain a bare minimum situation. Do not cancel out love altogether because one situation didn’t go as planned.

#3 – Being single is NOT a punishment. Being single is the perfect time to figure out who you are and to become WHOLE. Don’t allow the absence of a relationship to make you lose sight of what you’ve been called to do. What will YOU bring to the table when God brings you your person?

#4 – Learn your love language(s). Think about the things that should’ve been non-negotiables in your last relationship and define them as ABSOLUTELY NOTs in the future. How do you need your next partner to love you in order for you to feel appreciated? Take the Quiz!

#5 – GET UP, GIRL! Stop sitting around waiting for a phone call that may never come (and if it does come, hit ignore). Remember that the person God has for you will not need to be chased. Your love is worth more than rubies and is worth the wait.

YOU ARE THE PRIZE. LOVE WILL FIND YOU; SO STOP SETTLING FOR THESE WACK NEGROS THAT AIN'T READY FOR ALL THE LOVE YOU HAVE TO GIVE! KNOW YASELF, KNOW YA WORTH! Mkaaay?

In the mean time, I'm here if you need me!

Whiplashed by Siloam: IG: @whiplashedbysiloam – Lash Technician

What was your greatest inspiration/motivation to start Whiplashed by Siloam?

My greatest inspiration is my mother. She was a business owner for 21 years having a daycare center. Many people don't know that I am the youngest of 9 and to watch my mother build her own, while making 6 figures doing it is all the motivation that I needed.

What is the overall vision for Whiplashed by Siloam?

My overall vision for Whiplashed by Siloam is to have my own boutique, then begin to sale lashing products and begin teaching classes.

What have been the biggest challenges of creating, launching and maintaining your brand/business?

The biggest challenge for me was actually launching my business. I've been doing lashes since I was 17 years old and to actually take the leap of faith was scary for me. Also maintaining my business is also challenging. Nobody tells you how much work and paperwork you have to put into starting your own business!

What tips do you have for your consumers that may desire to launch a business of their own?

The tip that I have for anyone that wants to start a business is to research! Make a plan, check things off, and stay focused. The hardest part is getting started. This is your dream, work hard and get it done!

What are your future plans for Whiplashed by Siloam?

My future plans for Whiplashed by Siloam is to keep branding myself and also building up my business until I see my name on my own building.

Three Ways to Style Wild Fable Joggers

Friday, September 14, 2018

Disclosure: The links in this post contain affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my link.

So everyone has that one article of clothing that they will pull out of the closet at any given moment, for any and EVERY occasion. It's that one pair of jeans or that one graphic tee that can and will go with just about anything. For me, that happens to be this pair of joggers from Target's new Wild Fable collection! I wore them for my birthday, to church, to someone else's birthday and several other places LOL. I love them! Now I am no fashion guru, but I definitely know how to put something together when it's time to get right, honey! Style is the level of confidence that you exude when you throw on your favorite t-shirt or favorite pair of shoes.

For my birthday, I wanted to be chill with the option of dressing the outfit up or down, depending on where my friends wanted to drag me after dinner that night. I decided to pair the joggers with the matching bralette and opted to go for a more casual look with these super comfortable Reebok Classics (I will definitely be ordering another pair of these very soon).

After dinner, I switched from Teyana Taylor to Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter with these black Steve Madden Platform Heels that I found at Ross for $40 (don't sleep on Ross)!!! A simple shoe change took this look from casual to dressy in a matter of minutes. These Ankle Strap Sandals and Chunky Heel Sandals from Charlotte Russe would get you from Teyana to Beyonce for half the price!

(Charlotte Russe is always having a sale, yall!)

As you all know, I wore my favorite joggers to the Dream Village Tour in D.C. (favorite joggers meet favorite location - it was only right). For my day of adventuring in D.C., I wanted to be comfortable but cute! I chose this black crop top from my FAVORITE online store, Boohoo.com! They almost always have sales and they're usually 40-60% off of EVERYTHING, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. They are actually having a 50% off of everything sale right now!

Forever 21 also has crop tops like this one that would go great with Wild Fable Joggers! Amazon has a bunch too!

I decided to add a color pop with the Reebok Classics again. Seriously, I have to get more of these. If you wanted to add a bigger pop of color, you could definitely go with one of these basics from Boohoo.com

My last look was for a surprise birthday party at a friend's house. Because I know me and I know my friends, I knew that pictures would be taken and I would need to be dressed accordingly (no matter how casual my friends claim we will be, a photoshoot is still going to take place, so I always know better). I love buying men's t-shirts from stores like H&M because they're super comfy and can always be dressed up or down when paired with a more feminine item like these joggers!

I love Nike Huaraches! I have this White Pair that I wear in the Summer, Spring, Fall AND Winter (who gon' check me boo?). And if you want to save money on cute sneakers, remember that there is a size and a half difference between Women's sizes and Kid's sizes - the shoes I have on in this picture are a size 6 from Kids Foot Locker.

I am already thinking about how I will wear these joggers for the fall. How cute would they be with these Open-Toe Booties from Aldo?! Aldo is also having a sale right now...Jesus be a fence around my bank account. Anyway... what's your favorite look? How would you style these Wild Fable Joggers? Don't be afraid to wear your favorite piece more than once! I'd love to see all the ways you style your staple items!

McCleese Fitness – Personal Trainer

Wednesday, September 12, 2018

McCleese Fitness: IG: @mccleesefitness – Certified Personal Trainer

What was your greatest inspiration/motivation to start McCleese Fitness?

Ehhh I think just helping the black community. We already are put in a tight spot financially, and sometimes mentally. Forced to take the easy way out. Buying the cheaper meals that are processed and causing diseases. Forced to work excessive hours sometimes so less free time and no real time for exercising. Between that and so many people giving bad fitness tips, I just figured that I could give back in a way that wasn’t so much about me but more about my community and my people.

What is the overall vision/purpose of McCleese Fitness?

Overall vision is to help as many people as I can become healthier. Along with becoming more confident and helping them have fun in the process. It’s nice to create a safe haven for people that is helping their minds and bodies at once.

What have been the biggest challenges of creating, launching and maintaining your brand/business?

That’s a tough one..... But, I’ll say it's split between the retention rate and the promotion. So many people don’t necessarily see all of the good in the fitness lifestyle and therefore can’t reap too many benefits from it. Whether they think it’s too hard, or they just think there is an easier and faster way to get the job done. A lot of it is mental and you can’t break everyone’s mind down until they're ready. Now promotion is different. I have a lot on my plate sometimes so I have to do A LOT on my day to day. Really to the point where most of my promotion/marketing is just social media and having an online presence. That and word of mouth. Free time is slim to none so I do what I'm capable of.

What tips do you have for your consumers that may desire to launch a business of their own?

Ok so I know it sounds very cliché but PERSEVERANCE. It’s almost a guarantee that there will be a lot of roadblocks along the way but giving up is not the way to overcome them. Just dig a lil deeper, and try to keep positive people around you. They will hold you up when you’re falling. And never be afraid to branch out. If you can find some people who can challenge your new ideas to get all of the flaws out, even better. Always want to test run them a lil to work the kinks out.

What are your future plans for McCleese Fitness?

Well the first thing will be starting my documentary series. I think the cool thing about it is, it’s not all about me or my business. There will be a lot of different categories, views and perspectives on every episode that is put out into the world. Hopefully we can shed a lil light on people’s world. Also, I have a couple of classes in mind to put in place in the gym. And I’m still working on my traveling plans for when I start going city to city and helping people reach their goals. Definitely excited about that.

Dream Village Tour: The Journey to Entrepreneurship

Friday, September 7, 2018

For those of you who don’t know, D.C. is one of my FAVORITE places to visit! I use any excuse to hop in the car and go; however, because there’s literally ALWAYS something going on there, I never have to think very hard for an excuse. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of traveling up to my favorite place for two awesome events with my roll dawg (shout out to Meeka). In one day, we attended the Ubiquitous Women’s Expo and the Dream Village Tour, and in the midst of these events, we also survived the insane driving of D.C. Lyft drivers and residents (another story for another day LOL); so, we had a very busy day! My favorite event of the two was the Dream Village Tour, hosted by Creator and Founder, Eunique Jones-Gibson (IG: @euniquejg). The purpose of the Dream Village Tour is to “create a village of dreamers” where everyone works together to pursue passion and purpose as we watch each other succeed and WIN. It’s a Dream Village “because it was and always will, take a village.” This movement is creating virtual and physical spaces for dream-driven and goal-oriented people. What an awesome vision, right?!

During the Dream Village Tour stop in D.C., I had the privilege of listening to a panel of INCREDIBLE boss women as they discussed the pros and cons of their entrepreneurship journeys. Each of these fabulous women had very different, yet extremely similar paths to owning their own brands and businesses.

The Panel: Dominique Broadway (IG: @dominiquebroadway), Personal Finance Expert and Founder of Finances Demystified. Erika Totten (IG: @toliveunchained), Spiritual Life Coach. DeannaRobinson (IG: deannarobinsonfit), Health & Fitness Expert and Owner of the Fab Body Factory. And my FAAAAVE… Alexandra Elle (IG: @alexelle), Author & Self-care Advocate. The panel was moderated by Gia Peppers (IG: @giapeppers), Entertainment Journalist and 1/5 of the Black Girl Podcast. I encourage you to check out ALL of these fabulous women because they are all incredibly dope!

sidenote: the pants I'm wearing are from TARGET. shoutout out to wild fable.

So, here’s what I learned about entrepreneurship from the brilliant women listed above at the Dream Village Tour:

  1.  Entrepreneurship is NOT for everyone! Be PROUD of your 9-5. Be content with where you are called to be right now.
  2. Entrepreneurship is a spiritual journey. The journey is not all about you, it is much bigger than you!
  3. Remember that your validation is the work that you’re doing in the world, NOT on the internet. It’s not always necessary to share things with the world as they happen…give yourself permission to share your progress or your wins when it feels right!
  4. Allow yourself the grace to know and understand that you don’t have to be touching everything all at once. Be okay with the fact that things shift and change and that things won’t always get done when you planned to.
  5. Know that there is no GLORY without the GRIT! You will have to work TEN TIMES harder for yourself than you do with everyone else.
  6. It’s important to plan some sort of “Happy Hour” for yourself everyday so that you can celebrate the work you’ve put in at the end of each day!
  7. Self-care is STILL vital on your journey to owning your own brand/business. Now, it does NOT have to be expensive; but, it needs to exist.
  8. Stop feeling guilty for charging what you and your services are worth (this guilt comes from being accustomed to giving away emotional labor for free).
  9. You MUST establish business hours for your consumers AND yourself!
  10. Remember that you are not “bossy” simply because you are not afraid to take the lead and cultivate your leadership skills!
  11. You are worthy of EVERYTHING. Stop internalizing rejection and know that what is meant for you will not pass you. Proverbs 18:16 - A man's gift(s) makes room for him, And brings him before great men.

If you are considering pursuing entrepreneurship, ask yourself this question: what sacrifices are you willing to make in order to achieve your goals and see that your dreams come to fruition? Trust your gut with the answer to this question.

If you are currently an entrepreneur, what tips do you have for others who desire to build their own brand/business?

With Blessings & Imperfections,
Bre

A.Nicole Beauty Lounge – Nail Technician

Wednesday, September 5, 2018

A.Nicole Beauty Lounge: IG: @anicole_thenailtech – Nail Technician

What was your greatest inspiration/motivation to start A. Nicole Beauty Lounge?

My inspiration to start A. Nicole Beauty Lounge was my older brother. He died in 2008 and ever since then I felt like everyone around me projected that I’d fail at whatever I decided to do. Considering the fact that most people tend to fall off bad when something so tragic happens that close to home, I thought I would too. With the help of my family, my mom mostly, I was able to overcome some of my many fears and begin to work on my own business.

What is the overall vision/purpose of A. Nicole Beauty Lounge?

The overall vision of A. Nicole Beauty Lounge is just to show that black girls do rock out when it comes to whatever they put their mind to, in my case my nail salon! We solely promote beauty done the right way from nails to lashes, facials and waxing with more to come!

What have been the biggest challenges of creating, launching and maintaining your brand/business?

To me the biggest challenge was making sure I was creating something authentic. I wanted all my stuff to be my own, not something I copied off of someone else when it comes down to logos, apparel and even my nails! I take so much pride in my work and I’ve learned that not everyone deserves it and I mean that in the most humble way possible. Once you learn that everyone doesn’t deserve to be a part of what you do, brand building and maintaining won’t be hard because the people apart will pay what you’re worth without any questions and even remind you to keep going for more. That was the hardest lesson I learned, ever since things have run a lot smoother. One of the most important lessons I learned was don’t mix business and pleasure or better yet personal and business! People will begin to think they can use “family” or “friend” benefits when it comes to business and those are totally separate. Setting the standard and rules the first time is so super important so it won’t become a problem later!

What tips do you have for your consumers that may desire to launch a business of their own?

A) Don’t give up! EVER!
B) Take criticism and use it to your advantage
C) Ask for help (you’re not the first or last with that problem)
D) Do your own research that pertains to everything in your business
E) Set goals, meet them, set higher ones
F) You may not have the building or the funds yet but do something every day for your business even if it’s just buying a planner to begin organizing.
G) Remember who said you couldn’t do it (that’s fuel)
H) Most of all keep going and don’t be afraid to fail the first time. Everything happens at the right time.

What are your future plans for A. Nicole Beauty Lounge?

My future plans for A. Nicole Beauty Lounge are to expand into a nail school and possibly a beauty school that includes hair, esthetics and nails and employ my students as they graduate. Also, franchise possibly. If not, at least expand to 5-6 other big cities and go from there! There are also a lot of great upcoming things branching out from under the A. Nicole umbrella and Pretty N Pricey is one of those many projects!

Just a little gem:
The obstacles that come along are set up to discourage you and make you quit but finding a purpose helps you remember why it matters so much to get there. The key is once you get there not to forget the fight you put up on the way to where you’re going so that you don’t go back.

“Love what you do and do what you love”

The Time is NOW!

Sunday, September 2, 2018

I woke up Monday morning feeling inadequate and less than my worth. I was truly starting to question my intelligence, my capabilities and my purpose, because of a couple challenging tasks that were more difficult than what I am used to… the upcoming launch of this blog and the potential of starting a new job in my field. My brother introduced a concept to me known as  "imposter syndrome." This is essentially the feeling of inadequacy even despite the credentials and the achievements that prove that a person is exactly what they fear they aren't (or never will be) ... which is successful, accomplished and meaningful. This was the voice and the attack of the enemy trying to rob me of my gifts! I was worried that once I released this blog… once I answered God’s call, that there’d be no way I would amount to other bloggers. That there’d be no way this blog would become all that I prayed for it to be.

The remedy for this is to look the problem/task/person/whatever right in the face and remind that thing that God's plans for you are signed, sealed and preparing for delivery and it’s not in their jurisdiction or ability to hinder what God has already written into His plan. One day I woke up and realized that this isn’t just about me, that there were people depending on me. That day, I woke up with confidence, put a name to this dream come true and all of hell SHOOK because I’d taken my confidence back. That’s what I want this blog/space to be about...taking back all of the things that were stolen from us. Peace, joy, love, confidence, discipline, vulnerability, forgiveness...all’at.

I am MORE than ENOUGH, and these moments of inadequacy are just the enemy's way of trying to talk me out of my purpose and I refuse to let that happen. Romans 8:28 - we know that in ALL things (INCLUDING feelings of inadequacy, doubt, lack, etc.), God works for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose. I once heard Denzel Washington say that "Ease is a bigger threat to progress than hardship." When we are not being challenged, we get bored. When we get bored we become stagnant and we stop putting our all into our purpose. Starting right now, I am learning to EMBRACE the challenges that come my way and to be content with where I am. I am capable, and I WILL see myself through this season of my life that I asked God for and was blessed to receive. From this moment forward everything we say is going to manifest.

Everything we touch will turn to gold. And like that Wild Woman Sarah Jakes Roberts said, “everything we release will PUSH BACK THE DARKNESS!” We’re about to walk into our light together! I’m not going on this journey without YOU. The time for us to be who we have been called to be is NOW. With that being said, WELCOME to flawBless. Let’s become all that we were created to be, together… blessings, imperfections and all.
WE CAN DO THIS - Phil. 4:13.

Bre

The Slim Creative -- Designer/Photographer

The Slim Creative: IG: @theslimcreative – Designer/Photographer

What was your greatest inspiration/motivation to start The Slim Creative?

-The motivation to start The Slim Creative came from my passion to create things. Whether it be logos, photographs, or paintings. I just really love to create and make things that be people appreciate and love. Most importantly to be able to make a living from it and work just for myself is a blessing, but I’d do it even if I didn't make much from it.

What is the overall vision/purpose of The Slim Creative?

-The vision of The Slim Creative is to be a company where small brands and businesses can come to one place and get consistent and quality work for all of their branding needs. I believe that one of the biggest things holding small brands back are their visuals, so TSC is here to be of service and bring a professional quality to the visual aspect of their brand and help in any other way possible. If I can't help you I’ll connect you with someone that I trust can give you the same quality and attention if not better.

What have been the biggest challenges of creating, launching and maintaining your brand/business?

-I'd say the biggest challenges would probably be separating myself from a very saturated market in creative services. The way I do this is by being consistent, in not only my quality and work, but also in being professional. From my website to my email address I try to run a business that looks and carries itself as such. Being reachable and servicing the needs of my clients is why I do what I do.

What tips do you have for your consumers that may desire to launch a business of their own?

-My biggest tip would be to do your research. Research your field, your product, and also your competition. At first it’s ok to wear many hats but once it’s time to grow it’s always best to get help in areas that you don't specialize in, it will only make your brand better. If you're not a creative person find someone that is. And lastly, probably most importantly, is to not worry about others around you while you're growing. It is YOUR business and brand so it’s perfectly ok to take steps at your own pace. Success will not happen overnight.

What are your future plans for The Slim Creative?

-What I see in the future for The Slim Creative is for it to be a full functioning brand agency and creative market. Where entrepreneurs, big and small, can come and get their business up and running all in one place.

The Wait. Post-Graduation Edition

As some of you may know, I am a recent graduate of NC State’s Master of Social Work Program. I’ve spent the last six years of my life absorbing all of the education and experience, both academic and non-academic, from this colorful institution. Including the last six years, that means that I have been in a classroom nearly every season of my life for about 20 years…talk about perspective! 20 years of education with the assumption that after it’s all said and done, and all the tassels have been turned, I would be employed. Since May, I have been waiting… and waiting (ehh, I wouldn’t say the wait has been a patient one) to receive a call or email, shoot a text or SOMETHING from my dream job as I have watched my closest friends accept job offers, pick up and move to new locations and receive promotions. Now, here I am, nearly 4 months later and I’ve heard nothing but the sound of my own cheers and applause for everyone else. BUT, what I have done, is channeled my impatience and experience into 4 essential steps to help us embrace our season(s) of waiting post-graduation. DISCLAIMER: These 4 steps can be applied to any season of waiting, not just post-graduation stalls.

Step #1: STOP BEING BITTER. Periodt.

Bitterness is a feeling worse than anger because at least with anger, you have some fragment of control; however, bitterness usually occurs when we feel like we have lost complete control of everything. Now listen, I get it. It’s so much easier for us to be bitter and wallow in our disappointment than it is for us to stand tall and celebrate all of the amazing achievements and milestones for everyone else. You must do it anyway. On your most difficult day, call your best friend(s) and tell them how proud you are of everything they’ve been doing lately because while you can’t go back and change the fact that they just received their second promotion and you’re still waiting on an offer, you CAN choose to move forward with your life and wait your turn. Remind yourself that a season of delay is not denial, rather, a period of transition into who you were created to be. Soon, everyone will be celebrating YOUR accomplishments and you will have established a new level of resiliency. Rest in that.

Step #2: Find Out Who You Are & Who You Want to Be.

While you wait, this is the PERFECT time to explore all that you have to offer. Who are YOU? And how does that person affect who or what you are working to become in your next season? These are two important questions that you currently have time to ponder and answer because well…you’re waiting, so you got time today. Getting to know yourself can be uncomfortable for some of us especially since most of us feel that we already know who we are. I mean, it’s easy to think that when our Planners and Google Calendars have us going from one thing to the next without a second to take a deep breath, let alone find ourselves. But if you don’t take advantage of the space and opportunity that you have to do it now, you will be scrambling to answer those questions once the seasons change.

Step #3: Learn to be Content.

God is not as concerned with your happiness as much as He is with you being content in your current season. We spend so much time trying to get THERE that once THERE is HERE, we’re still searching and begging for more. Now, there is nothing wrong with wanting more…especially when you truly know what your purpose is and that you have so many gifts and talents to use. But, you have to learn to be content with what you have RIGHT NOW, regardless of what is or is not going on around you. Can you appreciate what you have, while you have it, before you receive more?

Step #4: Play Yo Part [3 Stacks].

You are going to have to MOVE. This is not the time for you to be twiddling your thumbs and tappin’ your toes. Do whatever it takes to fulfill your purpose! Faith without works is DEAD and whether you choose to accept it or not, you have a part to play. Somebody’s life is relying on you to move, play your role and do what God has called you to do…that someone is YOU. So, wipe your tears, spit out the bitter taste in your mouth and be all that you can be.

I am applauding and celebrating all that you are right now and all that you will become.

With Blessings & Imperfections,
Bre
